According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy’s Energy Star Web site, http://www.energystar.gov, 20 percent of the electric bill of the average U.S. home is attributable to lighting costs.

One of the easiest ways to lower your home energy costs for lighting is to make good choices when changing light bulbs.

One good choice is an Energy Star-qualified compact fluorescent light bulb.

A CFL can save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months, according to the site…

Central New York schools save money with creative energy contracts (The Post-Standard)

Rising energy costs have led to a surge in the number of Central New York School districts looking to cut their utility bills and make upgrades through energy performance contracts, which offer creative financing and guaranteed savings.

The schools districts don’t pay for the improvements up front. Instead, they pay for the projects through the energy savings.

“With district budgets getting tighter, everyone wants to save money on energy and these contracts are a way to accomplish that without costing taxpayers anything up front,” said Carl Thurnau, state Education Department’s director of facilities planning.

Energy prices are starting to soar again.

Oil prices, for starters, have broken free of the fundamentals that usually rule the market, rising despite a glut in surplus crude oil. Benchmark crude climbed to its highest level in eight months Thursday, touching $73.23 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gas prices at the pump have been surging too, reaching a national average of $2.63 a gallon.
