Your Questions About Window Tint Laws

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Paul asks…

NY WINDOW TINT lawssss plz help?

I want to tint the front side windows of my ml350 the thing is, the new york law “says” 70% of the light must be allowed in for both back and front side windows, now i dont understand how the back windows are 20% tinted from mercedes and das allowed, so i wanted to ask, how much am i allowed to tint the front side windows and not get any bullshit from cops in NEW YORK CITY THANK YOU PEOPLE much love.
they are very dark and i donno what VLT is, my car is a 2006 and it has very light blue tints from the mercedes factory, i want to darken the front. not too much but how much am i alllowed to without gettin in trouble. the guy i went to said that the front were already tinted 70% from the factory but its very light blue tint and honestly it looks completely clear…

mariok answers:

The back window or the rear side windows are 20% VLT? The back window can be very dark. I have a Jeep and the rear side and back windows are all very dark, prob 20% VLT. The state law usually just covers the front windows.

ADD: VLT is visible light transmission. 100%VLT is clear, 0% is black. If the guy tested the front and said it’s already 70% you can’t legally go darker. All states have 70% max. So 70 must be how all front windows come from factory.

Your Questions About Smart Window Film

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Donna asks…

Does this article use date rape imagery to explain Senator Scott Brown’s win in Massachussetts?

Or is it just plain old womanizing?

“I’m going to need some Advil and a cold compress, please. I’m the Massachusetts Electorate, and I have what is bar none the absolute worst hangover of my entire voting life.

Seriously, I was so drunk on power, so caught up in the moment, so free of any of my usual inhibitions, I can’t remember what’s gone on these last two weeks. Think, Electorate, think. What did I do?

This much I’m starting to remember. Martha and I walked into the party and everything seemed to be going fine. She wasn’t talking much, but she never really does, and she wasn’t exactly pushing me to bare my soul, either. That’s what I’ve always liked about Martha: She’s a low-maintenance politician.

And now I’m vaguely recalling that stranger across the room, the one in the barn jacket who kept smiling at me and seemed to know my name. Martha vanished for a while, and – is it bad that I’m saying this? – I didn’t really care.

Suddenly, that tall, handsome man was standing at my side doing something that Martha rarely did – offering to pay for drinks, chatting me up, curious what was on my mind.

Every time I ever tried telling Martha about my day, my hopes, my dreams, she shushed me and said she was preparing a legal brief or watching “Law & Order.’’ And now there’s a stranger telling me he could change my entire world.

Scott! That was his name. Lived near the outlet stores. Talked a lot about being smarter with money. I know, not like Martha, who always had some expensive home renovation project up her sleeve.

And then, I remember that time itself seemed to stop. The mundanity of everyday events gave way to the exhilaration of my suddenly unpredictable existence. No more Martha taking me for granted. No more Martha calling all the shots. I was living the moment, immersed in the life I always wanted before caution overwhelmed desire.

We were on the dance floor, Scott and I, moving to the music, his hands all over my body politic. Everyone was watching, and I mean everyone – fellow partygoers, bartenders, passersby staring in the windows. Look at me, the Massachusetts Electorate, the bellwether of America!

I think I took my shirt off. I think I didn’t care. I remember something about Scott in a pair of Calvin Klein jockey shorts, but it may have been a picture he showed me from his wallet.

Out of nowhere, there were video cameras filming us from every angle. Analysts were describing the events. Scott’s important friends were texting and calling my cell. Get this: Curt Schilling, talking to a regular old Electorate like me.

Then, above the din and the music and the cheering, I distinctly heard someone ask, “How’s Martha going to feel about this?’’

And just like that, there she was, back at the bar, giving me that aloof prosecutorial look I knew all too well. I went back to her, sweaty and out of breath. Amazingly, she didn’t seem angry. She didn’t really show any emotion at all. She just pretended like nothing ever happened and tried to continue on.

Oh, but something did happen. I knew it, she knew it, and so did Scott, who was still beckoning from the other end of the bar, asking me to take a walk outside. And now it’s coming clear: I did.

He was talking nonstop, but I noticed he was repeating himself over and over again – 41st vote, and drawing boards, and being a “Scott Brown Republican.’’ He was starting to lose me until we were standing in front of a GMC pickup and he said, “This is my truck.’’

Oh, you bad boy. You bad, bad boy.

I remember catching my breath. I remember pulling a curtain shut. I remember having to make a really important choice.

I needed to send a message. I don’t know much about Scott, and I have no idea how long he’ll be in my life, but I do know that nobody will ever take me for granted again.

mariok answers:

Not rape, but the oddest portrayal of a politician I’ve ever seen. While its both childish and inappropriate, that’s the breaks of freedom of speech. Of course its also a very inaccurate portrayal of both Scott Brown and the average voter. It makes the voter look like a floozy, a drunk, someone who can’t think, or doesn’t think. It says “You didn’t go with Martha and it must ONLY be because you were drunk or tricked or just a plain old sl*t.” Its insulting, really.

Your Questions About Window Tint Laws In Texas

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Donald asks…

Can I avoid paying such a high traffic citation fee?

if i get a citation for my windows being too dark and I remove the tint before my court date, will they still charge me the full amount or give me a smaller fee? I got pulled over and the trooper asked to check my windows; when I got them done I was told it was legal, he told me that my tint is registering at 11% visibility while the law is 25% in Texas. I apologized and removed the tint once I got home; the citation states that I could be fined up to $303. I removed the tint and before my court date, will I still have to pay the full $303 or is there any way out that anybody knows? BTW the guy who did my tint is offering to redo it free of charge and is re reading the laws to ensure that he puts on the legal amount.

mariok answers:

Some jurisdictions consider these to be “fix it” tickets. Which means as long as you take care of the issue there is no fine. However, that is totally up to whatever court has jurisdiction in that area. Since you’re ticket was issued by a state trooper it will be especially impossible to know. Troopers work for the state obviously, but when they write a ticket it is sent to the state court having jurisdiction over the area you were stopped in. The same court that the county deputies or city officers in that area send theirs to. Most jurisdictions though do not consider it to be a “fix it” case, especially for window tint. Those are usually reserved for things like cracked windshields, brake lights or headlights burned out, etc. Since you have to actually go out and have window tint installed, there will probably be a fine regardless. All that you can do is take some pictures of your car, including your tag since it’s on your ticket and will prove it’s the same car, and take them in to court with you. The solicitor may decide that you’ve learned your lesson, since you obviously did since you removed the tint, and either just drop the case or let you plea guilty and give you a reduced or even 0 fine. That’s pretty much totally up to the solicitor though.

Your Questions About Smart Window Tint

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

Paul asks…

When they cure the clear coat, will they ruin my soft top during the baking process?

Hello, I had to bring my car into a collision repair shop after some one ran a stop sign. Now I have a soft top with tinted windows, I was curious as to what they are going to do about my top while painting. I haven’t had any experience with convertibles while I was painting. Now the car is a 2005 Jeep Wrangler with tinted windows. I’m sure the heat from the paint booth would cause some issues with my top, but do you think they will be smart enough to remove it from my car and spend all the extra labor money taping off my bucket? or do you think that they would just try and paint/tape with the top still attached and on? I’m concerned for my top. I’ve heard many stories where the detail guy didn’t know what to do and he scratched the crap out of the windows to the point where you can’t see out of them. If they mess up my top they are required to replace it right? This is a shop called Bob Hastings Collisions and its a Geico xpress shop in NY.

Any help/advice/comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m supposed to pick it up tonight!
Ah, I always thought that it was by temperature. The teacher made us sit in a paintbooth once while it was curing to let us know what happened, all I remember was it getting really hot. And yeah thats true about making mistakes, but you I’m sure have been told about the laws of darwin.
Not darwin Murphy dam! haha

mariok answers:

The sun is far more damaging than anything a paint booth can do, they use infrared lights which do not use heat so much as light to cure the paint. And its not like making pottery where its baked fro 48 hours.
And no shop in this country is going to remove the top and tape off the interior, think about it, anything that would ruin the top would also ruin the interior as well. I suggest you address your concerns to the shop manager, after all that is who is responsible for any problems and the person you will be dealing with if there are any. I have not heard of one single case of a top getting damaged in a paint shop, AS is life, anything can happen but keep in mind a business that damages more than it fixes, will not be in business long.

Lisa asks…

Orignal or Restomod? 1973 Thunderbird 460 big block…?

I am considering buying a 1973 ford thunderbird. It ahs the 460 big block and is a deep blue colour. What would be smarter, restore it to classic or Restomod it? If i was to restomod it was thinking of putting a holly 850 cfm carb, 0.0030 overbore, painting it a blue pearlescent, 235/70/15R firestones up front 255/60/17R firsetones in the back, magnaflow 44 series exhaust, Some descent rims, a customized suspension system, tinting the windows with a 50% black tint, and customising the interior. Would that raise the value? I could do either but what would make it worth more?

mariok answers:

Restoring a car to exactly factory original is always
the best for any antique vehicle. It will cost you less
and yet give you the most value for your money.

Nothing will change the fact that the car is old. There is
no actual value of such an old vehicle. When you talk of
antique value, many issues apply. First is how original
is the vehicle? Is the paint original? If it has been painted,
has the original type of manufacturers paint been used,
or has a newer type ‘look alike’ been used? The same
goes for every part on the vehicle. Are they original by
the manufacturer, or are replacement parts made from
the original dies by a company that bought them from
the original manufacturer? Etc, etc. The antique value
of anything all depends upon what is the current market
trend for such an item. One thing for sure is that the
popularity of the make, model, and vintage can determine
a current market trend, and that can be quite high.
Your T-Bird is one of the better ones to hold a higher
value when original.

Now, you can put a whole lot more money into it by doing
as you have mentioned. Of course, all these added features
add value to a vehicle, but you would be hard pressed to
find a buyer that would give you more profitability over
that of a restored original. You might get more money
out of it due to the added features to change it into
something different that its original purpose, but the extra
cost for the additions may be so high that you would
not be able to get much more in the sale than what you
had spent.

Personally, I would take my time, a lot of time, and to
restore it to factory original all the way.

Ruth asks…

I was given a ticket with 2 violations and I was wondering what would be smarter?

I have two violations 1. No sunscreen label on tinted windows 2. Illegal left turn. Well I do have a good excuse for the Illegal left turn, when I went to court the first time they rescheduled me for trial by judge. The question is how good is getting a lawyer to dismiss these tickets, or how hard is it for me to do it myself? Just because i’ve had a lawyer before and I ended up probably paying the same for him, court fees and defensive driving. By the way it was in Houston, TX.

mariok answers:

I wouldn’t get a lawyer. Judges will reduce the charges or the fine sometimes just beccause you took the time to show up to court to plead you cause. Good Luck!
