Melting buildings could help solve the energy crisis

January 18th, 2012

Yahoo! News – As a measure to save energy, the new Molecular Engineering and Sciences building at the University of Washington melts in the heat of day. Seriously. The outer structure of the futuristic building is, of course, structurally sound. But to save energy in cooling costs, …

Your Questions About Car Window Film

January 17th, 2012

Maria asks…

What’s that film…………?

It’s an old film (but in colour, maybe 80′s?) that’s about this family who have a car crash but they don’t know they’ve had the crash and they all die in strange ways, but it’s like in another reality, and if they don’t die in the other reality (kinda like the border line between life and death) they don’t die in real life.

Whenever someone dies this black car comes and picks them up (presumably death?) and they can be seen in the back window .

10 Points to whoever gives me the correct name, first correct answer gets it!!!
I think it is Dead End but an earlier version, the plot sounds the same, if possible can you link me to the imdb for the original please?

Dead End

Donald asks…

which film is this?

It was a scary one, with a family who moved into an old house and it was haunted/posessed. the husband had a beard and a tash i think, and im pretty sure he went a bit loopy at one point. i think at some point a sash window closed on someones hand and they couldnt lift it up and also the front door blew open like someone breakin it in and the house was shaking….. and at the end they were all escaping in the car and it was chucking down with rain and the guy went back for the dog which i think was in the basement and he started breakin down a wall to see what was there. i think the film may have been re-made recently? sorry its a bit vague but i cannot for the life of me remember the rest!
Thats the one! Eeee yes it was with Margot Kidder! Lois Lane! I knew there was another reason i liked it haha, thanks everyone! xx

mariok answers:

It’s the Amityville Horror (1979) with James Brolin and Margot Kidder. It was directed by Staurt Rosenberg. A remake was done in 2005 with Ryan Reynolds and Mellisa George. I never saw the remake, but I heard it wasn’t that bad. It’s actually based on a suppose true story of a haunted house in Amityville (Sulfolk), NY. You can find also sorts of information online about the movie as well as the story about the house. From my understanding, people do live in that house now, but it doesn’t look the same as it did before.

Betty asks…

Do you know which film this is?

It was an American romantic comedy surely from before 2005. The protagonist is a girl who cannot accept that her bf broke up with her and follows him to his trailer car in the desert. Then she decides to sleep in a tent then in her car front of the trailer to be close to him, then she meets his neighbour and they fall for each other. She is accompanied by her friend (another girl) and they visit the friend’s Indian grandfather who helps them with some snakebite and gives them vise thoughts.
There are three scenes I can recall: one is when the protagonist girl watches the “neighbour guy” dance with a doll in his window , another one when the Indian grandpa says to her something like “maybe you need to have some snake poison in you, so that you can survive living in this world” and the last scene is that they are on some family reunion – maybe some wedding? – and the girl is together with the neighbour guy, who brougth her chocolate to the party…
I know it makes little sense, but I really need to know the title of this film :)

Ps: for some reason, I thought it was Kate Hudson, who played the main role, but I looked through all her films on IMDb, and it is none of them… :(

Thx in advance :)

Donna asks…

Help with finding a film title.?

I am looking everywhere for a film I remember watching when I was younger, but cannot remember the title.
It starts off with a guy and his wife in the car out for a drive when a horse and cart goes out of control in the snow, and the horse kicks through the window screen and kills his wife outright. The guy runs out into the snow in shock.
They have a daughter and it is just him and her left. They start to see groups of people dressed in black, holding binoculars ready to watch a disaster that would happen in that spot very shortly. It was an odd film . The daughter gets killed near the end, but the strange ‘tourists’ I think bring her back. It’s driving me mad knowing what it’s about but not knowing the film name so I can watch it again, gRR! Thanks for any help :)
Thankyou!! That’s really helpful, now I can go get the film :D :)

Mary asks…

Has anyone watched the film Catch Me If You Can?

While observing this film , I came to notice how Leonardo’s character’s mother was having an adulterous affair with her husband’s best friend. The family then proceeds to lose the house and car due to IRS tax fraud investigation.

Spoiler

The father then passes away and when Leonardo goes to speak with his mother, he looks through the window as his mother is married to another man and had another child.

Also, I was watching a film called The Insider, in which Russell Crowe’s character, Jeffrey Wigand, is left behind by his wife due to the fact that he was fired from his position as vice president of a reputable tobacco company.

I’m just curious, do these kind of events occur in real life? I’m still young and don’t have much life experience at all. But, I find this very odd and cruel. It’s as if they just forgot about the husband/father due to lack of financial means. It really makes me sad.

mariok answers:

Yes.. It happens all the time. There are some really cruel, cold-hearted people out there. You just have to look out for them, and when you find them, stay very far away. Although some people can be deceiving, it isn’t as hard as it seems to see right through a person.

Jenny asks…

What is this film? Please help!?

OK, now this has been bugging me for an awful long time now, as I just cannot remember what film this is from;

A little girl is having to climb/crawl across a ladder which is suspended between two buildings, propped up on the window sills, and Im sure she’s got a monkey? There might be a little boy as well at some stage? And the ‘baddy’ has a black carriage/car?

This image is something that has been bugging me for ages so if anyone can help me I will be eternally grateful!
Im sure I didn’t dream this up or imagine it, I think I saw the film when I was much, much younger.

Please help! Thank you!

mariok answers:

Maybe “Monkey Trouble”?

That’s a movie about a little girl with a monkey…it’s been so long since I’ve seen that movie I don’t know if it has the exact scene you’re talking about in it.

Daniel asks…

The New Twilight Film?

Does anyone else feel that the Twilight film will be a complete flop? I LOVE the books! But, the trailer looks so different than the book! Like when Bella’s all like ‘How long have you been 17′ the scene is in the woods? In the book it’s in the car . And when Bella’s like ‘I’m not afraid of you’ and Edwards like ‘You shouldn’t have said that’ they fly out of a window ! Edward doesn’t FLY! He JUMPS/RUNS!!! That scene in the book they are at Edwards house in his room! It just all seems to different and I think us Twilight fans we be disappointed! What do you think?

mariok answers:

Well, ya know the makers of the film (including Steph) say that they are trying to keep it as close to the book as possible, but it doesn’t look that way to me. The movie versions of books are always a lot different than the book. It looks interesting and I hope it’s not a flop, but if it is can you imagine how bad New Moon will be? Ugh.

Your Questions About Car Window Tinting

January 17th, 2012

Steven asks…

Where can I find help in tinting my Car Windows near Waverly, TN?

I have been trying to tint my car windows and I’m having trouble. Can you tell me where I may be able to find someone who can assist me in how to tint my windows without the expensive cost?

mariok answers:

I really don’t know of any good places to get your windows tinted in waverly, tn. However, the best window tinting i have ever had on my vehicle was in webster, tx.
PABLO BLUE WINDOW TINTING did an awesome job on my suv!

Hey – the drive from tennesse to texas is beautiful – especially on the way home with tinted windows!

Happy trails!

George asks…

car window tint repair?

the window tinting on my car is getting scratched.is there a repair kit for this?

mariok answers:

There is no way to repair tint damage. It is only a thin film. You can go to a car repair store (auto zone, o’reilly’s) and get some do it your self tint or you can go to a place and have your whole car retinted from like 70 to 200 dollars

Ken asks…

Does tinting your car windows really make it cooler in the car during the summer?

I was thinking of going to a shop and just have them tint my large back window. I heard to make sure you get a good warranty and also that a high quality tint is used.

mariok answers:

Today’s window tinting can block 99.9% of the UVA and UVB and also keep more than 60% of the heat from entering your vehicle. Stay away from dyed films and select a high performance or ceramic film. Check LLumar at http://www.llumar.com or FormulaOne at http://www.formulaone.com

Richard asks…

Does tinting your car windows reduce the heat build up in a car?

Example: If i parked my car in direct sun for 5 hours, would the tint(black 50%) make a difference in internal temperature of car.

or would be the same temp as if you had no tints, because its been in the sun for so long.

ANY body know, i want to tint my back windows in the back

mariok answers:

The window film will reduce the length of time it would take to reach the temperature of a non tinted car. In other words it would take twice as long for a 50% tinted film car to reach the temps of a non tinted vehicle under the exact same circumstances.

Obviusly a 15% tint would take that much longer.

Richard asks…

I have two Window tint tickets, what happens at the third?

i have gotten to tickets for window tint on my front windows and i have had them both signed off and payed the $25 dollar fine now what happens if i continue to get tickets for it? is there a 3 strike rule? or anything that adds up?

mariok answers:

It depends on where you live because in most states you need to bring proof that the tint has either been removed of corrected and yes they love making money but if this continues you can be fined a much higher fine since you have disregarded already twice……………

Mark asks…

what is the best way to clean window tint adhesive ?

i need to re-tint my back window and need a way to clean the adhesive off the window without damaging the rear defroster lines in the window

mariok answers:

Goo Gone works well too, I have also used paint thinner but I’m not sure it’s too good for the defroster lines.

Joseph asks…

When you take your car to a mechanic to put window tint on it does the mechanic take off the door panel?

You know that part below the window wher the window slides down into when you roll it down, do they take that off to install the tint?

mariok answers:

I disagree. Some tinting is applied on the inside, which would require removing the inner door panel. A simple sheet of tinted film could easily be scraped or scratched from the outside and that doesn’t make sense.

Does anyone recognise this description to a film?

This is gonna be a bit hazy as i saw this when i was about 7 years old.
It is an older horror film .
i can remember watching it and it was about crows.
the crows attack people and kill them,
there is a scene where some children are in a school and the crows are attacking the windows trying to get to them, to kill them.
Some blonde(i think) woman leads about 4-5 children out the back and they try to sneak past the crows.

another scene i remember is the blonde woman sitting in her car and the crows start to attack the Windows of her car,to get in.

and i remember i think the children were playing on the climbing frames and then they had to run in the school because the crows were coming.
this film sounds really crap, believe me. i know.
But i really wanna see it again cause i remember i was scared of it when i was younger. lol.

ANY help will be appreciated.
thanks.

Does anybody know the name of this firefighter themed movie?

I don’t know the name and only saw a few minutes of the film.
The firefighter is off duty, I guess, and drinking in a bar.
He goes outside to see a fire and runs into the building.
He finds a kid inside and grabs him to carry him out.
Then a burst of flames shoots them out the window and they fall.
He lands first on the roof of a car with the kid in his arms.
That’s what I remember.
Can anyone please help with this mystery?!?!

Linda asks…

Is air that comes from a car bonnet harmful? It must contain oil…..?

The inside of a car windscreen is often covered in a black film (wipe with a tissue to see) – but this doesn’t happen if you recycle the internal air instead of letting it come in from outside via the bonnet. Presumably the black stuff is engine oil and presumably we breathe a fair bit. And… presumably that would be carcinogenic, wouldn’t it? For this reason I always recycle the internal air and then open a window to change the air. Am I being paranoid? Does anyone know anything about it?
No to the toilet seat spray and the hand sanitizer and the paper towels, Paul! :-) But I get what you are trying to say.

Car question. Smelling antifreeze when turning on defroster?

I have a 2005 Dodge Neon. The other morning I turned on my defroster. After a few minutes I started to smell antifreeze and the window fogged up. It was more of a thin film then a fog. I asked a couple people and they said I have a lead in my heating coil. For a few days I just didn’t use the defroster but this morning I put it on and it worked fine. Cleared up the fog on the window and there was no smell of antifreeze. I know a problem can’t fix itself but I’m starting to think my car is possessed. Any suggestions as to what might be wrong?

mariok answers:

Heater core is leaking , have it fixed soon or it will cost you alot more then a simple repair bill

Joseph asks…

How do I stop the dog from licking the windows?

My dog gets very excited / anxious when he goes for a ride in the car. During the trip, he obsessively licks the interior windows. It’s probably a coping mechanism for his anxiety, but I need a solution that doesn’t require psychoanalysis. Not only is it disgusting, as it leaves a thick film that’s difficult to remove, it also hinders my ability to see out the windows! I’ve tried putting nasty tasting stuff on the windows, but they too are opaque-y and my dog doesn’t find anything disgusting, as he routinely eats cat poo. Any ideas?
I should specify that my car is a station wagon, and he’s confined to the back via a metal gate.

mariok answers:

Hi A F, it could be that he is attracted by the smell of whatever you use to clean the windows with. Try vinegar and tissue paper which not only cleans the windows but may well put him off licking them

Robert asks…

Searching for a particular film, if anyone would know the name?

Hello everybody, I’m in search for a particular old thug film which probably came around in the 80′s or early 90′s. If anyone would have just a clue of what the name of the film would be, it would be mostly appreciated as well. I was young when I watched the film so my description might not provide great information, but I will try be as detailed as possible.

I watched the film in the late 90′s, it was just a random pick in the video shop I liked the front cover and grabbed it. The plot of the film as I remember it was about a young boy in a rough neighbour hood of America witnessed a murder from his apartment window out in the street (How the movie began). This might not be fully correct, but as I remember it began with two thugs you entered a store and I believe robbed it; after robbing it they shot someone to death out in front of the store if I am correct. The boy who witnessed the murder knew that his brother was in the same gang as the two thugs who had committed the murder. As I believe, not quite sure but one of the thug might have actually been the little boys brother.

Anyway to the point of the film, the leader of the gang which I believe was Wesley Snipes (not %100 sure) didn’t want the investigation to lead to them. As the film gets more deep the leader of the gang went after the little boys brother and at the end of the film the leader of the gang and another member had the brother in the boot of a vehicle while telling the little boy everything will be alright just come here. The brother in the boot of the car was shouting out to his little brother to run while the leader got angry and started shooting the boot. The leaders friend smelt gas coming from the car and the last shot blew the car killing the child’s brother and the leaders friend. After that the boy and the leader were in court and that’s how the film ended if I can remember correctly (I was young).

I am almost %100 sure that the leader of the gang was Wesley Snipes, but I’ve been searching for this film for nearly ten years now and can’t find it. So I am not guaranteeing anyway that it was Wesley Snipes, but it looked like him.
If anyone has a idea of what the film name could be, your answer will be more than appreciated. Thanks to all those who will answer on this question, it means a lot.
Well if I remember correctly the front cover had the younger brother, the older brother and I think the leader (if it is Snipes). Like I think they were kind of in a line on like the kind of bottom right of the front cover if I remember correctly. I can’t promise you anything about the front cover, but I think it was something like that. Hope this helped.

mariok answers:

Is there anyway for you to remember part of the front cover? So far, it doesn’t really seem like a Snipes 90s era movie but if I knew the cover I could help better

Lisa asks…

Is this a good Horror film idea?

I came up with this myself… Just so you know this is just the ideas of the MAIN scenes… not all of it.

It is about a farm in England that was a crime scene from where a serial killer used to live.

The date shows (1992)
Then:
In the beggining, there is a farmer is driving a tractor through a field when he sees a body on the floor, he goes over to examine it when suddenly a hammer slams into the side of his head out of knowhere. (This bit is meant to make people jump).

The new date shows (2010)
There are some kids in school and they are going on a camping trip and they are talking about it loads. A group of 4 young boys are driving in their car at night in the open country-side when suddenly the radio, headlights, dashboard and everything electronic suddenly switches off. The car doesn’t start so they have to push their car. They eventually find a farmhouse where the farmer lets them in and since it is late he lets them stay the night. Halfway through the night, one of the teens looks out the window to see what time of day it is, he is horrified to see his car radio start up, the head lights switch on and the windscreen wipers start running. There is no-one in the car.

He then wakes his mates and they all look out but the car is off and no lights are on at all. He gets really creeped out and when he goes up to his car in the morning, he finds dents and scratches on the car . He goes back into the farmhouse to find the farmer standing at the door way shouting at him. He then finds out that in the night, all of his house was wrecked. Everything had been moved, pictures broken etc. The teen begs it wasn’t him and they end up arguing until the farmer kicks him and his mates out.

They then decide to push the car further on down the road, and to get their revenge on the farmer, they decide to camp in one of his fields. Little do they know, that this was the same field in which the serial killer had buried all of his victims in a mass grave. The house is said to be possessed by the killer. (The farmer didn’t know this either.)

They end up through the rest of the film trying to survive when they hears screams and they see that the farmhouse has caught fire etc. They end up having to survive by running away but since they are in the country side, they have no where to run. The killer wears a sack over his haid with a smiley face painted on to it.
He kills with a hammer.

What do you think?

I will develop it more thats just the basic jist of it.
:)

mariok answers:

That actually sounds really good! You would be a good movie writer! Just maybe not always make the killings be with a hammer… Maybe one of the boys accidently kills his friend because he thinks hes the bad guy… Add something unexpected and not just like every other typical horror movie. :) Your on a great track though! :)

William asks…

what film is this? i dont remember the name of the actors sorry?

all i can remember about this film is this—

the film is about a woman who seduces older men for them to change their wills, she then kills them by heart attack. she is then sent to court where she seduces her solicitor- they have an affair in a car park where she smashes a strip light and the have sex on the car bonnet beneath the light but the solicitor stops seeing her. at the end of the film he ties her up to stop her from having sex with him but instead she masturbates whilst handcuffed to the bed. her former husband/ lover then finds out and shoots both the solicitor and the woman but not fatally, he then beats the solicitor on the stairs next to a full length window, the woman runs at her ex and pushes him and herself into the water below (she lives on the quay side- harbour thing)

sorry bout the detail, but thats all i remember. i think it might be sigourney weaver but im not sure

thanks, i hope it was enough
i dont think it is the little mermaid, maybe it is lilo and stitch. i have looked at the 2 films here but i dont think that either is right, but i will try to watch and might remember some details and will report back

What is the difference between colors in car tinting?

where can i find a good place to take my car to get my windows tinted? i live in the south bay. and also what color do i get? i want it dark but not were its illegal! can anyone help?

mariok answers:

Usually it is the percent of tint. Check your local laws because some areas allow a darker tint than others. In the north east if it is more than 50% tint it is illegal but in some southern states they allow more, so check your local laws.

John asks…

Tinting a Window?? (Car – Pontiac Grand AM)?

I’m Tinting windows by myself, for the first time. I have seen plenty of videos “How to’s” and have a general idea about it. I’ve seen them use “Soapy water” but i don’t know what that means! Can I use Dish washer fluid with water?? And the blow dryer?? what is that for and what are the DO’s and DON’T when it comes it window tinting.

Also, my pieces are precut, so i don’t have to cut them myself.

Any suggestions are welcome, please help! Thanks

mariok answers:

I just recently tinted the windows in my 08 grand prix. I didnt have any precut pieces, just rolls of 20%. All you need is little bit of dish soap with water. Not too much or your windows will have a white fog to them. A small decal squeegee for pushing out the air. And since your ppeices are precut you dont need a razor.. Just take your time and be patient. Make sure your windows are immaculately clean before you apply your tint. Put your soap and water mix in a spray bottle and mist the window. Line up your tint and stick it to the window. Just take your time with your squeegee. You may get small bubbles down in the corners of your window but dont mess with them. Just park your car in the sun and the water will evaporate. It may take a couple of days to dissapate

Does bronze car window tint look good?

I have a 2007 bmw 328i coupe and i was having the windows tinted at a local shop tomorrow and they said they recommend a bronze tint for it that it do not reflect or anything and looks good on BMW’s it looked ok but i didn’t know anything about bronze tint i don’t want my car to Look tacky is it an ok tint or should i avoid bronze?
My car is Black

mariok answers:

Bronze?? Seriously don’t do it. No major film manufacturer makes a bronze car tint. Double check the brand and make sure it has a lifetime warranty against fading, or turning colors like purple!

Check Solar Gard at http://www.solargard.com or LLumar http://www.llumar.com and you’ll note they do not promote bronze car films!!

The factory tint on a car window … is it considered to be a glazed window?

starting out as a sales rep for a window tinting business trying to find out everything about the business. Ive been on the internet reading as much as i can about window glazing but i cant seem to find the answer. Im thinking yes but not 100% sure.

mariok answers:

Welcome to window film! Best of uck to you. Factory tint is the tint that is in the glass done by the Manufacturer , or OEM that makes the windows for the automotive companies. The factory tit does reduce the VLT but has zero UV inhibitors in most cases. When Widow Tint companies speak of factory tint they are referring to the “color” of that tint. A charcoal look, a greenish hue, a more nuetral color for example. Does the car film “match ” or closely “match” factory tint? Take an SUV for example. They typically blacken out the rear passenger glass. If you tint the side passenger and driver will the window film “match” that color or clash?

If you need assistance check with the IWFA at http:/www.iwfa.com You should also ask the distributor reps or sales people from the manufacturer for their expertise. Check with film folks who sell the similar films in another town , if you are worried the competitor will mislead you.
You’ll be fluent in no time.

David asks…

Does tinting your windows lower the value of the car?

I wanted to get my window tinted but i was told by someone that tinting the windows on your car would lower the value of it. Is there any truth to this?

mariok answers:

That’s a very interesting question! The school of thought is that a prospective buyer might prefer a non tinted or simply a lighter or darker shade of tint than you have on your car right now.

There is that same argument about wallpaper in your home versus a white painted wall.

From my experience as a Vista and FormulaOne Dealer http://www.advancedfilmfl.com here in Tampa, window film does enhance the value of your car aesthetically and obviously it keeps the car cooler. It also cuts 99.9% of UVA and UVB which has been shown to be a factor in skin cancer

But in the end it’s all about beauty being in the eye of the beholder. One more thought. .when you see new cars being hawked on TV they always. .ALWAYS are tinted! This means that Ad execs think having tinted cars looks and sells better (in their eyes!)

Your Questions About Window Tint Laws

January 15th, 2012

Ken asks…

(Refund Issue) I just bought a car also bought a window tint and a back sensor?

Now, I found the price of the window tint and the back up sensor are heavily overpriced by research.
But luckily, they didn’t install the tint and sensor today, I made an appointment with them on next Monday, but they have charged everything from me by credit card.

So, I would like to request a refund, I want to know by law am I eligible to get my money back?

mariok answers:

If you’ve found a better price, let the dealer know. Since you haven’t received the service, and it was charged to a credit card you are eligible for a refund. If the dealer refuses, let them know that you will dispute the charge with your credit card company as you haven’t received the products/services for which you were charged. See how they react to that.

Legally, you should be allowed to receive a refund for any service for which you have not received.

Jenny asks…

in CA, whats the legal limit for a window tint on the front side windows?

Ive had my integras windows’ tinted for about 2 years now. My front driver and passenger window are tinted a shade or 2 lighter then the “limo” tint.

I was under the impression that this was legal until i got pulled over and a CHP at bigbear told me that no tint at all was allowed on the front driver n passenger windows.

Does anyone know they actual law regarding window tint?
Because i really dont want to take em off.

mariok answers:

The law in CA is no tint at all in the front windows. The rear windows can be as dark as you want, but the front two can’t be at all tinted. Some cops don’t care about it, other do. It all depends on the cop and where you live.

Ruth asks…

what percent are you aloud to tint your back windows if your 16?

I just recently got a few free rolls of window tint from a friend while cleaning out their garage. someone told me you are only aloud by law to tint even your rear windows only so dark depending on your age. I’m 16 so how dark can i go? the package my tint came in says 35% VLT can I use this?

mariok answers:

Age is not an issue. The state tint laws are. Check here http://www.tintlaws.com

Paul asks…

what does it mean when i have 75 percent solar tint sticker in my window.?

i live in Georgia. I have a 2001 ford focus lx and i want to put 35 percent tinted windows. is that going to affect the percent if i put it in the window? my car has a little sticker that says that it has 75 percent solar tint. the georgia law is at least 32 percent. i just don’t want to get pulled over.
thanks

mariok answers:

Actually you’d be wise to have a lighter film installed because a 35% over a 75% film will reduce the light transmission down to a high 20% (illegal) have a tint shop install a 50% and you will be much safer.

David asks…

How do you Remove window Tint?

Also what is the law on the Percent of tint in Illinios

mariok answers:

First peel the film off, then use window cleaner & a single edge razor blade to remove the glue.

Illinois law allows no tinting film at all on the windshield or front door windows. Rear door windows and rear glass can have any percentage of tint.

Carol asks…

laws on tint on windows?

My car is registered in NC. I wanted to get tinted window , within reguation of the NC of course. I have family In IL and visit there a lot. Could I get a ticket for having tinted windows when driving in IL? I know that IL does not allow the front windows of a car to be tinted and NC does. I was just wondering if in IL they could give me a ticket for that, even though my car is registered in NC and I am just visiting IL?

mariok answers:

Yes

Lizzie asks…

Aftermarket window tint in Germany?

Moving to Germany on Army PCS orders and am trying to get info. about window tint on our cars. My car came brand new from the dealer with darker window tint (not sure the %, but it was okay for TX, but I got stopped in GA for it). I didn’t pay extra for the tint as I just chose my car from the inventory and it happened to have it.

My husband got window tint put on his car (about the same as mine) from the authorized dealer he got it from after he bought it.

I have heard Germany has strict laws about tint and want to know if we are okay to take our cars. Someone told me that they are only concerned about limo-dark tint and that as long as police can see inside the cars, we are okay. Is this true or do we need to remove the tint ?

Thanks!

mariok answers:

I don’t know the exact %’s, but the simple answer is if it is a film applied as “after market”, they’ll probably have you take it off. If it’s chemically applied and/or an integral part of the glass, you are usually fine.

Richard asks…

Whats the best window tint to get for someone traveling to many different states weekly?

I want to get my windows tinted but I know different states have different laws, so which level of tint is legal in almost every state?

mariok answers:

35% on the front two windows is legal in approximately 30 states (the net is 32%). That would be your best bet. Check the states you travel in here at Tint Laws http://www.tintlaws.com

Your Questions About Car Window Film

January 14th, 2012

Sandra asks…

what is this film? what is this film?

i think i only remember that a guy was driving his car to run away while one of the two cops shot him from the back of his car, breaking the rear window. The guy was shot, and he was kinda dead. The car hit a post or something. Then the scene changed and we saw that some kind of wristwatches he wore sucked his blood. Then he was alive again, and he drove away, leaving the cops confused.

mariok answers:

Being dead is a binary condition, you either are or you aren’t.

Richard asks…

Need help with an old horror film.?

I have seen some answerers pull some pretty obscure answers out of their wonderful bad of tricks and I am hoping one of you can do the same for me. This has been bugging me for years now because no one I ask with any knowledge of old horror films can remember what I am talking about.

I saw a horror film when I was very young and I can only remember one particular scene. A person was trying to escape an old large house. They were in their car and someone was flung threw an upstairs window and landed on the windshield of the car . I want to say it was toward the end of the film but I can’t be sure. The time frame of this movie would have been from about 1977 to maybe 1982.

I thought it might have been “The Hearse” or “The Changeling” but I have never been able to confirm or deny that.

Does anyone have the slightest idea of what I might be talking about?

mariok answers:

I might actually know. I think it was a movie called “Burnt Offerings”.

Mary asks…

Looking for a piece of music.?

I’m trying to find a piece of music, I have no idea what’s it’s called or who it’s by.
It’s blues/slide guitar and was used in a programme aired in the UK in the late 80′s, early 90′s. It accompanied a home cine film that was shot from a car window as they drove through the USA.
If anyone can remember the programme, the music or any other info, it will be most appreciated.
Thanks.

mariok answers:

Try Ry Cooder’s Paris Texas soundtrack…that music was everywhere!…Its a long shot but worth a try.

Are front window car tint illegal in new jersey?

Since NJ DMV inspects only for emission now, are front passenger and driver side windows legal to have a tint? Or at least not be pulled over.

mariok answers:

It’s still illegal. You are allowed any darkness on the rear and back passenger windows see http://www.tintlaws.com

Ken asks…

How do you get bubbles out of car window tint?

mariok answers:

If you’ve just put the window tint on you can get a pin and poke a very small hole in the tint and slowly speeze out the air. I don’t know how it will work if its been on there for awhile as the adhesive would be dry but you can give it a go.

Thomas asks…

How do ya remove window tint from car windows that been on awhile?

mariok answers:

Professionals use ammonia.

Sandy asks…

Need car windows tinting anywhere around west covina, CA..any recommendations?

I need a car tinting for my mini cooper. does anyone know any good place around west covina and approximately how much it would cost. thank you so much in advance

mariok answers:

Just remember that in CA, tinting the windshield and/or front side windows is flat out against the law.

True, most cops won’t care, BUT! If you get pulled over for something else, you’ll get dinged for it and have to remove the tinting.

Maria asks…

Whats the easiest way to take window tinting off a car??

or should i just pay the $89 to get the film taking off???

mariok answers:

Cheap black trash bags, full strength ammonia in a spray bottle, and a hot/warm sunny day.
1.) Cover the windows is be removed with black bags on the outside of car(to warm the window).

2.) About an hour later cover inside of cars interior with bags and spray windows with ammonia, then cover inside of window with trash bag. Keep car in the sun. This will smell so take breaks or use a dust mask.

3.) About an hour later start peeling of the sheets of tint. Be careful around the window defrost lines. Any left over bits and glue use the spray and a little very fine steel wool to clean up. (you can use goo gone also, just more expensive)

4.) Clean windows with cleaner and that should do it.

It is time consuming, but if you use the black trash bags and the sun to warm the windows it does work. Or you can pay someone to done what I just explained.

Your Questions About Window Tint Laws

January 13th, 2012

Joseph asks…

what is the law in ohio about how dark window tint can be on a car?

what is the law in ohio about how dark window tint can be on a car

mariok answers:

You’ll find the Ohio State window tint laws at the link, below.

Good luck!… ?

Michael asks…

Can cops check your rear window tint?

Hi, i am asking this, because you can not roll down your rear window , also because i will use 35% tint on my rear window , with the factory tint it will be darker like 32%…… I thought about 50% but is it really worth it?

the law here states 35% on the rear window.

mariok answers:

Short answer: Yes.

Long Answer: There are different types of “tint meters”, the one you are familiar with is the one that slides over your window edge. There is a type that separates and you fasten one piece to the interior and the other to the exterior.

In this state you must comply with inspection, meaning you can’t say no, or more to the point you can say no, but then have a fine of about 500 dollars for failure to comply.

The law of your state may also have something about tint, saying that if a PO can’t see in, it is illegal.

Sandra asks…

Tint window through interstate law?

If my tinting window ‘s limit meet the requirement in my state, but not in other state, will I get ticket when I travel through the other state if it’s too dark for them?

mariok answers:

No.

If your tint is legal in your state of residence the police will not stop you. They will see that your plates are not from their state.

Robert asks…

Are you less likely to get pulled over for window tint if you have a nice car?

are you less likely to get pulled over for window tint if you have a nice car? if you live in a good area and have a nice car like a new Mercedes or BMW and you get a window tint, not like black but like a 35% tint are you less likely to get pulled over? because isn’t the point of the tinting law so that police can see in the car to see if you have weapons and stuff. i’m asking if the fine is the same if the vehicle is expensive, im asking if they are less likely to pull you over for tints if you have a nice car. because the law is there so gang members in like 98 impalas cant shoot the cop through their black tinted windows.

mariok answers:

Haha I believe so, because I had the same percentage on my old VWand my new Toyota Sienna, the cop pulled me over and told me the tint on my VW was to high and got a ticket, while no one has said anything about my Sienna.

My VW was a red car. Lol

Your Questions About Home Window Film Privacy

January 12th, 2012

William asks…

Window in the shower…?

I have a window in my bathroom, of course its an old home… and love the window but have no idea of how to preserve privacy. (The window is boarded up right now) I was thinking of placing a stain glass film over it. (See sample: http://www.windowfilmworld.com/atlantis_stained_glass_film.htm)
For those who have something like this… I wanted to know the level of privacy. The window is pretty big, I think its 2 x 3, so when I’m in there it sits as low to my chest… so I was wondering – especially at night – will a clear silhouette show throught he window? Will a silhouette diminish more by placing a real stained glass piece over the window?

Your suggestions or experience will be greatly appreciated!

mariok answers:

Depending on the light in your bathroom, you will see something of a silhouette-if you have the cash to do it, you may want to replace your window with glass block- it comes in various textures-which make it private and looks good.
If you don’t have a fan in your bathroom, you may want to consider a vent for your glass block.

Your Questions About Car Window Film

January 12th, 2012

Paul asks…

Who quoted this in what film?

“Alright, listen to me….You pull up right where she lives, right? Before you get outta the car, you lock both doors. Then, get outta the car, you walk over to her. You bring her over to the car. Dig out the key, put it in the lock and open the door for her. Then you let her get in. Then you close the door. Then you walk around the back of the car and look through the rear window. If she doesn’t reach over and lift up that button so that you can get in: dump her.”

mariok answers:

Sonny LoSpecchio in “A Bronx Tale”

Mary asks…

What film noir is this?

I have seen almost every film noir, but in the 1960′s, on TV, I saw a film about a guy wearing a trench coat. (I know, they all wore trench coats!) He had his arm in a sling at one point. He seemingly comes close to getting ‘whacked’ several times, and he has a friend who warns him to be careful all the time. At the end, he is walking on a sidewalk, a car pulls up and he is machine-gunned to death. His friend has watched the whole thing from an upstairs window and he is crying. Anyone know this?

mariok answers:

Like you said, everybody wore trench coats. They also carried machine guns, so unless you have a few more details, I have no idea which movie you are referring to.

Sandra asks…

How do I properly care for my soft top?

I have a 1996 e36 cabriolet. I just got the car, the top still looks good and I really wanna keep it that way, how do I clean it without damaging or removing the protective waterproof film. Also, what is the best thing to use to clean the rear window without scratching or discoloring it.

mariok answers:

I think you should look into fabric care and plastic care products

Take a look at
303 aerospace Protectant for the plastic window and/or
303 fabric guard.

Which one to use exactly may depend exactly what is the material of your top.

These are often found in some car-care but mainly in marine stores (or online) so they are designed to be used for heavy duty sun and sea conditions.

303 products will last a long time, but will not last forever, you will need to reapply periodically.

Ken asks…

I am in the market for a digital camera. I require a point & shoot w/ whistles & bells. $500 is max.?

I currently use a Canon z155 w/ 400 speed film & spend a min. of $500 annually on film & processing. I shoot in all lighting , people/animals in motion, hang out of car windows to take pix, shoot sequence shots, & love my macro & zoom. In addition to the above features, I require camera shake compensation, photo integrity up to 8″x10″, GOOD tech support in English, memory card use, accessory availability, component toughness because my camera travels almost as much as I do, & the option of using rechargable OR regular batteries. I want to be able to load the batteries & start shooting as soon as I get it home, so the camera has to be seriously user friendly. I would prefer to hear from people who have used their current digital cameras for 1 year or more.

mariok answers:

Hold on for a month and get the new SD850-IS (IXUS 950-IS). This promises to be an awesome little camera. It’s an upgrade on the SD700-IS that I just gave my daughter, and THAT’S a very impressive piece.

The price will be about $400 and you can get the rest of the info at the official site.

Your Questions About Car Window Tinting

January 11th, 2012

Mark asks…

I was cleaning my tinted car windows and something weird happened to the window?

It’s like fog/cloudy and I can’t really see through it. When I touch it or feel it it feels rough and not smooth like a regular window should feel, what just happened? What do I do?
I don’t know I was using leather chemicals cleaning up the interior and I’m guessing some got on the window I dunno I want to get it off though.

mariok answers:

Tinted windows aren’t meant to be cleaned with regular window cleaner. There are chemicals in the cleaner that will react with the tinting film.

You can try buying cleaning product that’s made specifically for tinted windows, rubbing it on, and see if that helps.

But if that doesn’t help, your only option is to remove the tint. It sucks, but it happened to me 2 years ago.

Chris asks…

Where can I get the luxury car light blue window tint?

The onet hat comes on most new luxury cars like Mercedes. Its alight blue sort of reflective. Can I get it at a normal window tinting place?

mariok answers:

This is a factory tint- -but- -you might check Madico at http://www.madico.com for their new Winco Film. It has super heat rejection and a blue-ish hue.

Sandy asks…

are car window tints placed inside or outside?

I was thinking it would have to be outside (seems easier) but I was told it is placed inside?

mariok answers:

Aftermarket tint film is put on the interior glass.
