Your Questions About Home Window Film Video

Sharon asks…

Adding Subtitles to homemade video/DVD?

I use windows XP. Windows moviemaker and Nero to make dvd’s. I am attempting to make a home movie ~ no problems there I can get the film in the computer chop bits out, add titles, credits etc and make the dvd ~ BUT I want to add subtitles, anyone know how I can do this? Its very important to me, I don’t need to be able to turn them on or off although if anyone knows how to do that it would be great.

mariok answers:

You can add subtitles to videos in Windows Movie Maker using one of the overlay title options. Depending on how much text you need to include, you may have to split your video into several segments in order to get the subtitles to display smoothly. Here’s a tutorial on adding subtitles to your movie:

If you never plan on using it for gaming it is perfectly fine, the only thing that may snag you is watching 1080p movies with the onboard GPU

AT&T’s U-verse cable box…?

I was looking at at&t’s u-verse’s cable box online, and I noticed that it has a few usb 2.0 ports on it. I did a little bit of research and found out that the box has a windows ce operating system. What exactly is the usb port for? Can I use this port for playing DivX files, or will it only understand .wma files or is that not even what the ports are for? I’m only curious because I was considering getting an xbox 360 or a DivX ready dvd player with a usb port for this reason, but if U-verse’s box will give me the ability to play DivX, I’ll save my money on an unnecessary component.

Also, before it even starts, spare me the commentary about film piracy, because that’s not what’s going on here. I compress home video to DivX format, and would just rather not waste time burning DVD’s….

mariok answers:

As with just about any provider box, USB does nothing right now.

Susan asks…

My videos won’t work properly on XP.?

Im gonna need specific answers here. Here’s the problem:

We have a project where we have to film and edit the clips in school (our school has Dell computers with Windows XP). I have tons of videos here in my laptop (my laptop is an HP computer with Windows 7) that i can use to make our video more awesome.

BUT the last time i tried opening my video with the Windows Movie Maker that comes with XP, it was all black, no pictures.

My laptop has Windows LIVE Movie Maker, which a whole lot different than the one with XP.

I only have 2 days left to edit and i cant even make the videos work.

Aren’t the videos in 7 different from XP? How will i make it work?

Is there some way that i might get them working for the Movie Maker in XP? Should I convert it or something?

I can’t edit the videos here at home because i fear that it might not work when we try to play it at school, that will give us a Zero for our mark!

Answers PLEASE quick.

mariok answers:

Use Picasa 3 & add your videos there & make a video instead.

OR

Don’t know if it works, just….

Convert ‘em using Total Video Converter 3.50 [Serial key -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRMn_kArij0]

Try it.

Thomas asks…

Is sony vegas movie studio 6 a good editing program?

ive tried nero, pinnacle, and windows movie maker… just to name a few, and i cant seem to get a program that actually works. Either there is static in the background, or the film freezes or the media is not compatible at all. im just looking to put my family home videos on dvd with a bit of editing, some music, and transitions. Im asking about sony because both my cameras are sony digital – so im assuming that would take care of the compatibility problem. any suggestions?

mariok answers:

SOny Vegas 7 is the latest version out, and yea, its good.

I use vegas for all my editing because it is easy to use and easy to learn…for transitions, all you gotta do is drag and drop, and the fades are also very easy.

So go for it, but get a trial version first, i dont want you dishin out a couple hundred for a program you end up hating. (not likely though)

ALso try downloading codec packs in order to allieviate some of the compatability issues you seem to be having right now.

Windows Media Player 11 how do i save…?

a video ? i filmed a video , fixed it up with windows movie maker and finalized it then emailed it to my home (i did it in school) now i dont know how to save it as a .mov file :( how do i save?

mariok answers:

Sorry, you can’t do this without a video file converter. If you’re doing this on a school computer, you have to check with the school’s computer administrator for permission to put the video converter on the computer you’re using.

Good luck!

James asks…

What program would or could I use to synchronize two videos into one split screen video?

I filmed a recent pistol shoot I was at. Using a non-high def video camera (640 by 480 or something like that)I filmed the shooters as they shot, then using an I phone I recorded downrange the targets being shot in 720. I thought it would be a blast to make a high def split screen video showing the shooter on one half of the screen and the targets being hit on the other. What I don’t know is what program I could use to synchronize these two different formats (and probably framerates) so I have one split screened shot. Bare in mind this is for home use and I am not looking for any profesional level $700 for a license programs. Nor am I a colledge student that has acces to 12 billion adobe programs. For all I know there may not be any consumer level products that can hep me. Thanks ahead of time. Oh btw my operating system is windows 7.

mariok answers:

Any video editor that can deal with multiple video tracks will be fine as soon as you get the different video formats created by the two different video capture devices into video files the editor can use.

In the Windows environment, the entry-level version of Sony Vegas can do the job. It is nowhere near $700, and you would not need access to “12 billion adobe programs” – if you can, you only need Adobe Premiere rather than Sony Vegas.

You will need transcorders, too. MPEG Streamclip from www.squared5.com can do the job – lots of others can, too. Since we don’t know what recorded the 640×480 video, it is impossible to know how you will get that video into the computer.

As well, since we don’t know what computer hardware is running that Windows 7, there is no way for us to know if your computer hardware can deal with the high def video the iPhone captures.

Betty asks…

Is this a good short subject film concept (I’m 13, so don’t expect much)?

It’s called Windows. As in the operating system. It’s sort of inspired by tron, but it’s less sci-fi-ish, and more war-ish. It may sound odd, but read this.

It takes place in the operating system of an old computer running Windows 95. The computer was a donation from a while back to an office building, but has never been used for years, and despite being hooked up it, is in a room that nobody goes in. The computer has also been on non-stop for several years as well. Nobody knows, but in the computer, there’s a civilization.

It’s a civilization of stick figures born in a drawing program. They live on the PC interface and live together harmoniously. To survive, they consume a tiny bit of the computer’s memory, and the many programs on the computer provide functions for the stick figures. They create most of the programs by themselves. There are many of them. Stick figures are born in the drawing program, and anything can be made in it, like weapons, tools, and basically anything except programs(which are made on compilers from the government of sticks) , they socialize and have fun by playing the games on it together and listening to music and watching video files on it too. There is a courtroom program for legal issues., and basically anything that can be provided to humans can be provided by their programs. By using the early internet software, they can communicate with other stick figures on other computers. There is a government where stick figures lead, and there is citizens and military of course. However, a stick figure from an email from a computer on the other side of the large room which is a newer one. The stick figure gets itself downloaded to the computer, and it brings a horrifying program.

The program is known as “WarPaint”. It’s a virus that threatens the lives of stick figures on the computer. It slowly consumes all the memory of the computer, which is in short supply as the amount of programs and stick figures grow, which takes up more memory. It also does something else. It takes the stick figures and sorts them into the categories it choses depending on how rich they are and “what side of the hard drive they live on” which means a lot because some parts have more programs and functions then others, this means a lot because in the old days, it didn’t matter., causing a civil war in the computer. The entire computer is at war.The “rich” sticks form armies to fight the “middle” and “poor”. There’s now anarchy as well, since the government no longer feels it has control. However, an admiral of the rich learns that a stick from the other computer put the program that caused this catastrophe in their computer. While he wishes to rid the computer of the program that started the disaster, his army has no faith in him because he isn’t 100% “rich” he used to be poor, now because the status you are born with will stay with you forever, he has nothing to do about it. Nevertheless, he searches deep within the hard drive to find the file. Accompanying many obstacles including bait, soldiers from the other computer, and news about the slow demise of his home. He eventually finds the program and attempts to delete it, but it has the power to keep itself on there. He eventually finds an old, outdated compiler on that place of the hard drive, and uses it to create a simple program that keeps the other computer (that’s always left on, like their own) shut down, if the computer is turned back on somehow, it shuts down again. he takes the icon in his hand and runs home as the program gets closer and closer to destroying their civilization, and gets on the internet to send it to the other computer’s email. He disguises it as “Speedyporn 1.5″ and when it’s opened by the eager dictator of the other computer’s civilization “Adolphe Stickenherder”, only for the other computer to be shut down forever. The “rich” and “poor” business is gone, and the computer is saved.

mariok answers:

Love, can’t wait to see it. Very artsy. It has a deeper layer of meaning. The stick figures adds a humorous element.
