Your Questions About Home Window Tint

Daniel asks…

What to do about my niece who hates clothes?

My niece, Katie, who this year is seven years old hates to wear clothes. Last year even at six if you didn’t keep an eye on her at the beach off would come the bathing suit. My sister-in-law who is best described as lovable hippy girl (complete with dreds) would just shrug her shoulders and say it was fine and that people wouldn’t mind. She and my brother have always allowed Katie considerable freedom all her life to run around the house without anything on as much as she wants, and now she hates to wear cloths at home. To be more exact she hates clothes period. She is home schooled so other than for weather there is really little need for her to be dressed. It is usual when we go over to their house Katie will be running around with nothing on and it doesn’t matter who else is there visiting. At their house you visit Katie on Katie’s terms. When my 5 yo. daughter sees her cousin she will want to strip off too and join in and we will let her not wanting to send any wrong messages to my brother and sister-in-law or to Katie and my daughter. They go so far as to let Katie go with them in the car to the city if they are going somewhere that she doesn’t have to get out and they will leave all of her clothes at home. She remains in the back seat with its tinted windows. She goes to places like the drive through or the car wash and to her it’s quite normal. They keep a blanket in the trunk just in case.
Last week we went to a little general store in the nearby hamlet that is owned by a friend of my sister-in-law who is another hippy girl. My sister-in-law put Katie in the car without her clothes but the problem is I had my daughter with us and she too wanted to go without her duds like her older cousin . Thankfully she was just getting over a cold so I had an excuse to keep her clothes on. To get to the store, we had to get into the car, drive twenty five minutes where Katie got out of the car in the middle of the little town, waited for some cars to pass, waved at one of them, crossed the street and stopped to say hi to a cat before we got to where we were going, all while she was in full view of anyone in the town, as if nothing could be more natural. As we chatted and had coffee with my sister-in-law’s friend, Katie and my daughter played around the store. I finally relented and let my daughter take off her clothes for the rest of the visit and the return trip. For the entire trip Katie remained in the buff as cars and customers passed and Katie couldn’t have cared less. The hamlet is very small and most people there know Katie so few are surprised.

I am wondering what I should do or say to my sister-in-law if she allows Katie at seven years old takes off her bathing suit at a crowded public beach this year. It seems she has already set the precedence this year by allowing her to go out without clothes.
Is seven too old to run around with this lifestyle, or what is too old? Is it eight or ten? Do you think there could be any negative implications allowing her such freedoms and what implications could this have on my daughter? Should I have allowed my daughter to join in by taking off her clothes when going to the general store since even when young most so rarely get to enjoy such freedom? I’m not sure if I should be concerned or happy that she is allowed such freedom in childhood?
@ “Just Me” the area is very liberal minded they don’t care. I am not going to have my kid develope a stigma about her body. I just wish I had such freedom at seven.
@ Jennifer, there are no more pedophiles today then there have been in the past. The Catholic Church is proof of that. The difference today is we have a media that capitalises on sensationalism and that’s the type of story that sells so you now hear about it more. The internet is just another channel for predators but the streets have not changed.

This obviously concerns you, but since the child seems to be happy, healthy, and well-adjusted, I would find something more important to worry about.

All the best.

Orange County Florida, Record Murder Rate?

Why so many murders in the Land of Mickey Mouse?
Two of my neighbors were murdered last nite. They lived next door to each other, and were ambushed when they arrived home. Why aren’t the police and sheriff department showing as much outrage over these deaths as they do when it is one of their own that is killed in the line of duty? One of the victims was a mother of five children. She was a hard worker, her company Thrasher Custom Seats, made motorcycle seats. The perps, one with dreadlocks, one with gold teeth, just got in their car and drove away. THe suspect car, 2003 Chevy Malibu with dark tinted windows and shiney custom rims. If anybody on here lives in orlando and recognizes the car or the description of the perp, pleas call the sheriff. These guys have to be taken off the streets. if they can do this to two innocent people, they could do this to your family. I, will be looking for them everywhere I go. Keep your eyes open people.
Pretty shitty answer. Thats not saying much since you are the only answer so far.
Just because the hoodlums that did this murders, might have been on drugs, does not make it drug related. These were good people who were murdered for no reason. You sound like this fuck face we have for a sheriff here, oh, its drug related. So that makes it OK? What the fuck? I’m ready for vigilanitism here. If I track down these aholes, and kill them, does that mean it would be OK, cause its drug related?
A few months ago a woman got off a bus, and was walking to her apartment, when she was shot and killed, and the idiots that did it went to the store and used her credit card. Wasn’t drug related. They just wanted her money. Drug related my ass.

David asks…

Why is my house always so hot?

I’m in NE Florida and the temperature outside now is hitting 90 almost every day. While I’m at work I set the thermostat to 79 degrees, but when I get home at 6 it’s set to automatically go down to 75. Well, when I get home my thermometer says it’s 82 insides the house At about 9pm it finally gets down to about 79 and by the time I get to bed ad midnite the temp finally makes it to 75. On the weekends when I am home all day, the temperature is set to 75 all day. When I wake up it’s usually 74 in the house and the ac is not running. Around 10am the temp inside gets over 75 and the AC kicks on. I then here the AC stay on continuously with the inside temp at 81-83 even though it’s set to 75. I feel the air coming out and it definitely feels cold. The southern side of my house has 2 large windows and a large set of french doors. In the afternoon the seen beats on that side of the house and I can feel the heat. A couple of years ago we cut down some huge Oak trees that used to shade that side of the house. In hind sight, that was a dumb move.

What do you think the problem is? I have a 2 ton unit that is just 4 years old and my house is 1300 square feet. Could the problem be all the heat from the southern side? Maybe tint the windows on that side of the house? Put up curtains? I don’t know what to do, but $250 electric bills suck! Any suggestions? Thanks

mariok answers:

Thermostats can vary a few degrees either way in accuracy and it can only tell what temp it is in that exact location, not 10 feet from it or in the other rooms but your 2 ton AC should be plenty
unless your ducts are undersized, where they checked or changed when the new system went in?
Obvious question is the filter clean and changed regularly?

Yes hind sight is 20/20, cutting down the oaks was probably not the best thing to do
full sun compared to shade can add 30 degrees in temperature
that’s why roof overhangs in FL tend to be larger to shade the walls.

The ideas you had are good tint, curtains or blinds will help
what color is your house? Your roof?
Re-painting with a light color can help lower the walls heat absorption
home depot even has roof paint for asphalt shingles
(same reason there’s so many white automobiles down here)

take a look in your attic check your thickness of insulation
Lowe’s and Depot both have free rental of the green fiber blow-in machines
if you buy 20 bags of insulation ( I put 40 in my attic to achieve about R-30 my house is 25′x50′)
and also VERY important make sure your soffit vents are free and clear of insulation
and you have adequate ridge or roof vents, the heat has to vent itself
formula here–> http://www.askthebuilder.com/B335_Calculating_Ventilation_Area_of_Attic.shtml

I’ll also bet you have aluminum frame single pane not dbl pane windows?
Single pane windows can transfer heat and poor door weatherstrip can leak air/energy

if your house is concrete block skip this one,
but if its framed check the bottom sill where the walls meet the foundation slab at the base of the siding, you may have air leaking through your baseboards between the walls and the slab (I did)

FPL has an Online Home Energy Survey

for more ideas $250 a month are you running a pool, hot tub, flood lights, freezer, old beer fridge?
