Grand’s energy-saving efforts earn green rank (Detroit Free Press)

The Grand Hotel, one of the state’s oldest hotels, opened last week with a brand new designation: green. The hotel was named a green lodging by state officials, recognizing efforts it has made to save energy and recycle.

As a green hotel, it fits right in on Mackinac Island, a leader in the state when it comes to recycling, according to Michigan environmental officials. Residents and businesses on Mackinac not only recycle things like bottles, newspapers and soda cans, they even separate their household garbage in special bags for composting.
