Central New York schools save money with creative energy contracts (The Post-Standard)

Rising energy costs have led to a surge in the number of Central New York School districts looking to cut their utility bills and make upgrades through energy performance contracts, which offer creative financing and guaranteed savings.

The schools districts don’t pay for the improvements up front. Instead, they pay for the projects through the energy savings.

“With district budgets getting tighter, everyone wants to save money on energy and these contracts are a way to accomplish that without costing taxpayers anything up front,” said Carl Thurnau, state Education Department’s director of facilities planning.

Personal computers may soon save large amounts of energy by “sleep talking.” Computer scientists at UC San Diego and Microsoft Research have created a plug-and-play hardware prototype for personal computers that induces a new energy saving state known as “sleep talking.”
